What is Spongilla? The freshwater sponge behind BIOSPICULE™

Spongilla is a genus of freshwater sponges in the phylum Porifera. Unlike most sponges, which live in the sea, it is found in lakes, streams and other freshwater environments.

A simple aquatic animal

Despite its plant-like look, Spongilla is a simple aquatic animal with no nervous system, organs or muscles.

A skeleton in two parts

Its skeleton has organic fibres, mainly a collagen-like protein called spongin, and tiny mineral needles made of silica, called spicules. Spongilla is the sponge; spicules are the microscopic needles that form its skeleton.

From raw material to cosmetic technology

Traditional Spongilla powder is a single, non-uniform mixture of the whole raw material. BIOSPICULE™ fourth-generation technology uses four types of Spongilla, purified and sorted by characteristics and size through an advanced Korean processing method.
